Fallow Deer

Fun facts

1. Fallow deer are native to Asia and were introduced into the UK by the Normans around the 11th century.

2. The male is called a buck, the female is a doe, and the young a fawn.

3. The antlers of fallow deer are very wide and they can easily measure 20 inches in width.

4. It takes about three years for the males to develop fully grown antlers.

5. Green grass is the main food source for the Fallow Deer. They will spend hours grazing and finding the best grasses.

6. It isn’t uncommon for females to have their first fawn when they are only two years of age.

7. Mating for the fallow deer extends from late September until late November. During this period, the males will become very aggressive with each other!

8. Young fawns are born about 240 days after mating takes place. They are born either in May or June of the following year.

9. Fallow Deers can live for about 20 years in the wild, and 25 when they are raised in captivity.

10. Fallow Deers prefer deciduous or mixed woodland with large clearings and typically live in small herds.

Head over to Bedfords Park, a historic parkland site set within 215 acres of land, where a range of wild animals including the fallow deer can often be spotted!
