Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday at The Brewery, Romford
To celebrate 100 years since The Armistice Treaty was signed, The Brewery, Romford is delighted to announce their third Armistice Day commemoration to remember the soldiers who fought in World War 1. The Armistice Treaty was signed by the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France, and it is well known that the truce went into effect on the eleventh day of the eleventh month at the eleventh hour, exactly 100 years ago.
A beautiful, progressive piece of art will be installed that comes to life through customer contributions in the form of a poppy wall. The public can take a poppy shaped print and write a message to pay tribute to the lives lost during the war. The poppies will then be dropped into the art wall which will gradually reveal a poignant image as it fills up.
The Brewery will also be celebrating through the installation of a large replica of a soldier’s war diary, amongst other WW1 memorabilia loaned by The Havering Museum. The pages of the diary will be turned each day to reveal a new entry to bring this emotionally impactful experience to life for the public.
Wreaths will be laid by several uniformed Primary School children, Romford Elim Church, the YMCA and two local Brownie units. On behalf of the council, former Mayor Cllr. Van den Hende and Tom Stobbart the Brewery Centre Manager will lay a wreath. Accompanied by the members of Romford Elim Church and their gospel choir, this promises to be a special time of commemoration as the two-minute silence is observed.
The service will be held by Reverend Glen Podd from Romford Elim Church and is open to the public. It will take place under cover in the concourse area by Sainsbury’s, Toby Carvery, Cosmos and Nuffield from 10.30-11.20am on Sunday 11th November.
The Brewery Centre Manager, Tom Stobbart, said:
“I feel very proud to be able to bring this event to the people of Romford. My Grandfather served in the second world war and I have always had a great connection to my Gramps and his service. I feel as the Centre Manager it is my responsibility to do all I can to keep the sacrifice made by so many people in the forefront of our minds”

‘Each year that the Remembrance Day service has been commemorated in the Brewery it has been received with appreciation and respect by the general public and businesses alike. They value the fact that a shopping centre demonstrates it has the community at heart.’
