London in Bloom Judge back in Romford
Romford BID were delighted to welcome judge Iain Boulton back to Romford on Thursday for the annual judging of London in Bloom!
The weather was perfect as Romford BID Director Julie Frost welcomed judge, Dr Iain Boulton, who was also joined by Pak Ling Wan from the Royal Horticultural Society, to judge their entry for this year’s London in Bloom.
This year, along with the hanging baskets and planters that were judged last year, there is an additional living wall at Romford Station as well as the Romford Pocket Parks.
The judging began with a presentation, followed by a tour of Romford to highlight all the areas where Romford BID are trying to invest in the town with colour and greening. They spent time with the Friendship Group, who meet at the Romford Shopping Hall, and heard how they were all involved in a workshop to draw and design what planters and plants they wanted at the front of the Shopping Hall. The Group spoke of how they loved being involved in this project and how excited they are to see their designs and ideas in full view of the town.
At the North Street Pocket Park, they were joined by students in Year 5 from St Edward’s Primary School who also spoke with great enthusiasm about how much they enjoyed their workshop, and they could spot some of their designs in the stencilling that is on the planters. One of the highlights for them was being able to be involved in the actual planting too.
Joining the tour Tom Stobbart, Chair of Romford BID and Manager of the Brewery Shopping Centre said, “It was wonderful to walk around different parts of the town and view the great work that Julie and the BID have accomplished. The pocket parks have been a fantastic addition to the town, they have created a place for discussion for our customers about the plants that have been used and a little haven for the bees who are enjoying the cat mint at the moment! I feel proud to be a part of the driving force that is improving the town and hope that our efforts do not go unnoticed by London in bloom.”
Iain was delighted to see a second living wall at Romford Station. Here, they were joined by Station Manager Scott McMillan. Scott commented about how great the additional living wall is looking and with the building works at the station almost complete there are future plans to improve the area with additional colour and planting.
Speaking about the visit Julie said, “It was great to welcome Iain and Pak to Romford and for them to understand the work of Romford BID and all we are trying to invest back into the town. We are delighted with this year’s hanging baskets, installed, and maintained by our contractor WindowFlowers Limited, and especially excited by the completion of the Romford Pocket Parks project. We were proud to receive Silver and Silver Gilt awards last year for the living wall and Business Improvement District of the year and hope to improve this year.”
Results of the judging are due early September, but Romford BID encourage everyone to see the Pocket Parks and green installations.
